A trans woman has received the Women of Courage Award at the USA White House on International Women’s Day. US First Lady Jill Biden, gave out the Women of Courage Awards to 11 recipients. Among whom was transgender woman, Alba Rueda.
Many perceived it as ironic that Alba, a biological male, received the award on the day to celebrate women. This feeds into the raging culture issue on whether trans women are women for all purposes.
Former Trump’s media aide and current Governor of Arkansas, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, criticized the ceremony. “It’s International Women’s Day – a good time to remember that Democrats can’t even tell you what a woman is”. She tweeted.
Unsurprisingly, social issues surrounding trans rights, extents and limits, have been a front-burner issue in USA.
A key driver of trans discusses in USA is the participation of transgender women in sports has been a key driver of the discussions. Notably, women athletes voiced their concern when Lia Thomas, a transgender woman, won a women’s swimming championship in March 2022.
Another recurring issue relates to which bathrooms to be used by trans people and whether biological male trans convicts get to serve their prison terms in the women’s block.
