President-elect Bola Tinubu has urged the Court of Appeal in Abuja to order the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to give him access to sensitive materials used in the presidential election.
Tinubu, the presidential candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC), stated that he needed to inspect, scan, and make photocopies of the electoral materials to prepare his defence against petitions that might seek to nullify his election. Tinubu’s lawyer, Akintola Makinde, stated that the materials would help them prepare their defence and compare the information with INEC’s back-end server.
The first ex-parte application, filed on March 6, had the Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as respondents.
The second application, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, alongside INEC, was deferred until Wednesday by the appellate court, which would sit as the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal. Both the PDP and LP presidential candidates claimed victory in the presidential election held on February 25, 2023. Atiku and Obi vowed to regain their mandates, allegedly given to Tinubu.
