Governor Sanwo-Olu Directs Payment of N5m Compensation to Driver, Adedotun Clement, assaulted During #EndSARS Protests.
The Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Agency officials and the Nigeria Police Force assaulted the driver. This happened during the first anniversary of the #EndSARS protests on October 20, 2021, at the Lekki Toll Gate.
Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa of the Federal High Court held that the treatment meted on Clement violated his right to dignity. The court ordered the state government and police to pay N5m as damages to the victim.
Clement was carrying a passenger from the Island to the Mainland, Part of the state, when he encountered the protest at the Lekki Toll Gate, which officials of Lagos State and the police disrupted.
In a recent tweet, Governor Sanwo-Olu stated that he had directed the state’s Attorney General to set up a meeting and pay the compensation awarded by the court. Despite the state government’s appeal against the ruling, Sanwo-Olu interceded in this instance in the interest of the public good and requested compliance with the court’s ruling.
The governor’s decision to compensate Adedotun Clement demonstrates the government’s commitment to upholding the rights of its citizens and providing justice for victims of police brutality and violence.
