Democracy Day’s Broadcast: Jamiu Abiola Reacts

Democracy Day’s broadcast by President Bola Tinubu is a relief for me, says Jamiu Abiola, the first son of the late Kudira and MKO Abiola. Jamiu Abiola, during the interview session on Arise TV Morning Show, expressed what June 12 means to him.

Reacting to the President’s speech, Jamiu described June 12 as a Roller-Coaster; it keeps going up and down. He said he was 17 years old when it happened. As a teenager, he was very excited that his father would win an election to become the President.

MKO Abiola was so happy he would win the election when the results were being counted, and he took the lead. The mood changed when the election was annulled. The lowest part was when he was locked up; after that, my mother decided to fight to the end.

The next I heard was that she had been arrested and might be given 8 years imprisonment. It was so emotional for me as a teenager, and I didn’t want to lose my mom. This was the period when Sarowiwa was killed. She was later released, and a few weeks after she was killed. So, I requested that she come to the United States and fight from there. But then she refused.

He came back to Nigeria to see his father but couldn’t see him. He was threatened to leave the country or else. This was the lowest part of the struggle until the city of New York, now named a corner of Nigeria’s embassy after my mom.

He acknowledged President Tinubu as someone who always recognised my mom every time. Others include Chief Osoba, Bisi Akande, Pa. Adefarati, and Prof. Wole Soyinka.

President Tinubu, during the Democracy Day broadcast mentioned by Dad and Mom, I felt so relieved. According to him, Tinubu was one of the people and the most loyal of June 12 became the President of Nigeria. Both Tinubu and my late father shared the same interest.
