AIG Warns Erring Officers Will Face Consequences Alone During Elections

During the sensitization event, AIG Yahaya Abubakar stated that the election remained a process of monitoring the integrity of the Force and urged officers not to misuse the opportunity. He noted that any evidence indicating that a police officer had shown bias or prejudice towards a particular party could undermine the entire election process. Such conduct would be considered a disciplinary offence that could result in an investigation and sanctions against the officer.

The AIG pointed out that the Force needed to “cleanse itself” and that erring officers would be dealt with and sacrificed alone to protect the entire organization from being jeopardized. He emphasized that the Force comprised almost 400,000 officers and that it was unacceptable for one person to compromise the entire organization.

Furthermore, Abubakar warned against the unnecessary use of Force during the electioneering process. He highlighted that police officers must avoid excessive Force on voters, which could drive away potential voters. He added that the public closely watched the election process and urged officers to maintain their professionalism throughout.

The state Commissioner of Police, Oqua Etim, echoed Abubakar’s sentiments, commending the media, civil society organizations, and political parties for their commitment to ensuring a smooth and peaceful 2023 election. He emphasized the need for all officers to maintain law and order during the elections and conduct themselves professionally.

In conclusion, AIG Yahaya Abubakar’s warning to officers against misconduct during the 2023 elections is a significant step towards ensuring a free, fair and credible electoral process in Nigeria. The assurance that erring officers would face the consequences alone should serve as a deterrent to those who might be tempted to engage in any form of electoral malpractice.
