Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni’s transparency and accountability have resulted in the state receiving an N20 billion grant from the World Bank. The grant was awarded for the state’s impressive performance under the SFTAS over the past two years. The grant has helped to improve infrastructure and social services in the state, says Yusuf Ali, SA. to the Governor on Digital and Strategic Communications. It directly benefits its citizens.
The State Fiscal Transparency Accountability and Sustainability Programmes for Results (SFTAS) is a World Bank and Federal Government to enhance transparency in budgeting processes. Menwhile, this does not apply to all states, as only the qualified ones benefit. There are various requirements, including Disbursement Link Indicators (DLIs). The program rewards the state with financial grants for performance in all indicators of budgetary requirements. Yobe State’s consistent budget cycle, due process entrenchment, and inclusiveness by the administration played a crucial role in achieving the overall top performer award on SFTAS.
However, the World Bank grant was presented by the Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, in Abuja. This is a testament to Yobe State’s commitment to transparency and accountability. The state government is already working to earn the 2023 edition of the grant, showing a continued dedication to good governance and financial management.
