The Nigerian political landscape is always full of surprises, with politicians jumping from one party to another. Peter Obi, the former vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is one of those politicians. The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has revealed the reason behind Obi’s defection from PDP to the Labour Party.
Reason Why Obi Left
According to Wike, some PDP chieftains insisted that power should remain in the north, which made Obi leave the party. The governor disclosed this during a meeting with the National Executive Committee of Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo Worldwide. Wike explained that Obi decided to leave PDP after a conversation with Sule Lamido, who allegedly told him that the north would produce the next president in 2023.
Wike, a strong advocate of power rotation to the south, expressed his disappointment with the development. He revealed that he had supported Obi’s candidacy and provided logistics and financial support for his campaign. Wike also accused some PDP members of sabotaging him during the party’s convention.
In Wike’s words, “Obi was running with us. I knew when Obi left. He was principled and said he couldn’t stand it; people should tell the truth. He went to see Sule Lamido in Jigawa…He said it is the north that would produce the next president. That was how Obi left, saying why is he wasting time.”
“I still maintained that look, if you have taken the presidential candidate, you can’t retake chairmanship, give us back the chairman, and I still stand by that and if you don’t do that, whatever you see you take,” Wike said.
