A group identified as Govindex Leadership, Empowerment and Development Foundation has dragged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to court over alleged violation of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electoral Act 2022.
According to the group’s solicitors, Ifeanyi Nrialike, on behalf of Ikechukwu Ezechukwu, SAN & Co., “INEC should electronically transmit election results through its ‘Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) or any other technology especially the Result Viewing Portal (IReV).”
The group also demands the prosecution of INEC officials who jeopardized the integrity of the February 25, 2023, presidential election. They insisted on the prosecution of the INEC officials that failed to upload the results in agreement with the act that guides the conduct of elections.
A group member stated, “It would amount to disregard for the rule of law if the disobedient INEC officials were not brought to justice.” The group also requested that INEC provide a compilation of its staff and ad-hoc who conducted the election for criminal prosecution.
The group appealed to the court to direct the office of the Inspector General of Police to investigate the INEC officials within 14 days, pending the fixing of a hearing date.
