Atiku and Obi were dissatisfied with the election outcome and filed petitions at the presidential election tribunal challenging Tinubu’s victory. At a press conference in Abuja, Governor Bello Abubakar of Niger State and Head of the Directorate emphasised that Tinubu and his running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima, had the mandate to rule Nigeria for the next four years.
Abubakar attributed Tinubu and Shettima’s victory to their impressive track records in Lagos and Borno states. He also urged those not content with the election results to seek redress peacefully in court, as provided by the constitution.
Abubakar states, “The president and vice president-elect have the nation’s mandate. The mandate is a trust to them based on their proven records in Lagos and Borno states, their excellent administrative prowess over the years, and sustained nationalism. Violence pays nobody. Let it be on record that as the largest voting bloc in Nigeria, we are standing by the mandate of H.E Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and we will defend it by every means necessary.”
