Bayo Onanuga, the Director of Media and Publicity to President-elect Bola Tinubu, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to suspend the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, due to the ongoing naira scarcity. Onanuga stated that Emefiele should not continue to hold his position after scrapping the cashless policy.
In a tweet, Onanuga expressed surprise that Emefiele is still in office despite the widespread criticism of his “ghastly cashless policy.” He urged President Buhari to suspend him immediately, saying, “Emefiele should go NOW.”
The CBN’s cashless policy was implemented in December 2022 and has been heavily criticized for exacerbating the suffering of Nigerians. Some state governors even contested the policy in court before the presidential election. The Supreme Court subsequently ruled that old notes would remain legal tender until December 31, 2023.
