With the 2023 general elections just days away, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) is set to announce the adoption of Bola Tinubu, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, as their candidate for the election. This announcement is expected to be made later this week.
Alfa Mohammed, the National Publicity Secretary of a prominent SDP faction, disclosed on Sunday, February 19, 2023, that Tinubu is the most capable candidate among the 18 individuals vying for the presidential position.
Mohammed stated: “We have made up our mind: it is Asiwaju. In fact, barring any logistical constraints, we will adopt Asiwaju in the next few days, and we will call a press conference to do that. Our only problem is logistics; note that we are doing it voluntarily.
“We love Asiwaju and believe the man will move Nigeria forward. If he enters there (presidency), generally, it will benefit all. So, that is the best person.
“As I am talking to you, we have been communicating with the 36 state chapters of the party.”
It is important to note that the current presidential candidate of the SDP, Adewole Adebayo, is yet to make any statement regarding the latest announcement from the party.
The adoption of Tinubu by the SDP, a party considered a third force in Nigerian politics, is expected to create more momentum for the candidate of the APC, and may impact the outcome of the upcoming election.
