Simon Ekpa, the factional leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has broken his silence after being released from Finnish police custody. He was reportedly released hours after being arrested and questioned at his apartment in Lahti.
It had been reported that Finnish authorities arrested Ekpa on Thursday. He was released the same day after the police allegedly arrested him for a suspected crime in Finland. The Finnish Central Criminal Police confirmed Ekpa’s release on Thursday.
According to HS reports, the police claimed that its operation in Lahti and the pro-Biafra agitator’s subsequent arrest were connected with an ongoing preliminary investigation.
Tommi Reen from the Central Criminal Police told HS during a phone interview, “The person being questioned today is suspected of a crime. We will return to the title on Friday.”
Following his release, Simon Ekpa took to his Twitter page to share a post calling for a sit-at-home protest. In the post, he stated that there would be no goats in the street and urged residents to avoid going out.
He wrote: “Tomorrow sit at home; no goat will be in the street. BIAFRA: Simon Ekpa is here to finish what he started on 23.2.2023 Live and direct.”
The arrest of Ekpa, a key figure in the IPOB movement, has generated controversy and reactions from different parts of the world. IPOB is an organisation that seeks secession from Nigeria, and Ekpa has been one of the leading voices in the movement. It remains to be seen what the outcome of the ongoing investigation will be and its effect on the IPOB movement.
