President Muhammadu Buhari met with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, on Wednesday, just 72 hours before the forthcoming presidential elections. The unscheduled meeting took place at the Presidential Villa.
Buhari stated that the meeting was at the instance of Yakubu and was part of efforts to ensure a successful election. He explained that his few minutes of lateness to the commissioning and handover of security equipment, valued at over N12 billion to the military and the Nigeria Police Force, was due to the meeting.
During the meeting, the two officials reportedly discussed preparations for the presidential election and measures to ensure a smooth electoral process. Buhari emphasised the need for all hands to be on deck to ensure a successful election.
As Nigeria prepares to go to the polls on Saturday, February 25, to elect a new president, tensions have been high, and there have been concerns about potential electoral violence. The meeting between Buhari and Yakubu underscores the importance of ensuring a peaceful and prosperous election.
