The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has announced that it will deploy 102,000 officials to provide security coverage for the 2023 general elections. A statement released by the Corp’s Director of Public Relations, Olusola Odumosu, revealed that the Corps would be deploying a range of special forces, and specially trained undercover personnel.
NewsedUP Report observed that the NSCDC officials’ deployment is to ensure an itch-free election. The Corps will engage officers from the Special Forces:
- Arms Squad Unit,
- Counter Terrorism,
- Chemical,
- Biological Radiological and Explosives Unit,
- Female Squad, and
- Rapid Response Squad K9.
To guarantee a successful execution of this assignment, the state commandants, Deputy Controllers General, zonal commanders, and other senior Corps officers have been responsible for monitoring field operations and supervising the exercise nationwide. The NSCDC officials have been warned to work in harmony with other security agencies and to sustain the synergy towards ensuring a hitch-free poll and guaranteeing a crime-free environment for eligible voters to exercise their voting rights.
NSCDC would collaborate with other security agencies to maintain surveillance and provide intelligence reports and updates on the security situation in different states, particularly flashpoints. The Corps urged officials to display professionalism in discharging their duties while warning that any staff member undermining the rule of law would be sanctioned. The Corps’ Operational Code and the principles of the Rule of Law must be applied to discharge their duties.
