Presidential and vice-presidential candidates of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, and Datti Baba-Ahmed have been accused by the spokesperson of the presidency, Lai Mohammed of treason for inciting insurrection.
The Labour Party and its presidential candidate have since come forward to deny these claims. Obi said in a tweet “I have never discussed or encouraged anyone to undermine the Nigerian state; I have never sponsored or preached any action against the Nigerian state. Those initiating these actions have increasingly used their official positions and agents to make false allegations against me.”
Many members of the opposition are still openly skeptical. Reno Omokri political commentator has urged the government to arrest Labour Party candidates the next time they speak out of turn. He tweeted
In another tweet, Mr. Reno asked why the candidates who expressed faith in the courts were still making undemocratic threats.
Reno’s call is one among many from the opposition for the arrest of the Labour Party candidates. It is yet to be seen if the authorities will acquiesce to their petitions.
