The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is reportedly seeking a court order to set aside a previous ruling on the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).
According to a senior INEC official, who preferred to remain anonymous, the commission will approach the Court of Appeal to challenge the order granted to the Labour Party (LP) and the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) to inspect election materials used by INEC during the last election.
However, with the gubernatorial election set to hold on Saturday, INEC would ask the court to set aside the order to enable the commission to reconfigure the BVAS before the election.
The development comes after weeks of controversies and accusations, by various political parties in Nigeria, of electoral fraud. As the gubernatorial election approaches, the commission is working hard to ensure that the election is free, fair, and credible.
The commission is optimistic that the court will grant its request to set aside the earlier ruling, allowing it to reconfigure the BVAS in time for the election.
