Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) has denied reports that it gave the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, N500m naira new notes on the eve of the presidential and national assembly election. The bank has urged its customers to ignore the claim entirely. The report, posted on Twitter by a user with the handle @ifygold21, alleged that the bank gave the sum on February 24, 2022, on the order of the President, Muhammadu Buhari. GTB has refuted this report and described the post’s sponsor as uninformed and malicious.
In a statement posted on its social media, GTB revealed that its preliminary findings showed that the post was made using a faceless bot account thought to be operated by an evil person intent on propagating falsehood and inciting well-meaning Nigerians to their malicious ends. The bank stated that the attack was unwarranted and severely threatened its continuing operations, with incalculable risks to lives and property.
GTB has restated its commitment to being a responsible, non-partisan corporate citizen with strict adherence to the highest standards of global best practices and sound corporate governance in all business operations. The bank has also escalated the post to all concerned parties, including Twitter, for the identification of the owner of the fake account and meaningful legal action.
