Breaking: Court sets bail at 500m for Kano Rep member, Doguwa.

The embattled Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, has been granted bail of N500 million and two reliable sureties in like sum by the Federal High Court in Kano. The presiding judge, Justice Muhammad Nasir Yunus, issued the ruling on Monday afternoon.

Doguwa is currently facing criminal charges related to criminal conspiracy, illegal possession of firearms, culpable homicide, and breach of public peace. Despite pleading not guilty during his arraignment before Kano Magistrate Court 54, he was detained until the bail hearing.

In his defence, Doguwa’s counsel, Nuraini Jimoh, SAN, argued that his client is presumed innocent under Section 35 (6) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999 as amended). The court ultimately agreed with the defence’s argument and granted bail to Doguwa.

As part of the bail conditions, Doguwa was required to provide two reliable sureties, one of whom must be a first-class emir, while the other must be a senior officer in the civil service. Additionally, Doguwa was ordered to submit his international passport to the Court Registry.

The court also restricted Doguwa, prohibiting him from returning to his constituents during the upcoming gubernatorial and state House Assembly elections on March 11, 2023.
