Adewole Adebayo, the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 Nigerian election, has cautioned Nigerians against promoting Interim Government, as it is an act of treason. According to Naija News, the Department of State Services (DSS) issued a warning on Wednesday regarding a plan to stop the swearing-in ceremony of the President-elect and replace it with an interim government. The DSS statement also revealed that violent protests would happen to achieve a state of emergency declaration and secure court injunctions against the inauguration.
Reacting to the development in a tweet() via his Twitter account on Thursday, Adebayo called for peaceful protests during the 2023 elections, stating that they are legitimate, albeit unpleasant. However, he warned that Nigerian youths must avoid any action regarded as a treasonable felony. Adebayo noted that promoting any so-called “interim government” is synonymous with joining a terrorist organization like Boko Haram or ISWAP. He emphasized that any gains made would be lost if treason was committed.
Since the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Tinubu as the President-elect, some civil society groups have protested the outcome of the February 25 presidential election. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has also led a protest against the election at INEC headquarters in Abuja. The former Vice President and the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, are also challenging the election outcome at the Presidential Election Petitions sitting in Abuja.
