The All Progressives Congress, APC, is set to produce the Senate President for the 10th National Assembly based on their convention and rule. This decision follows the party’s ability to secure the majority of seats in the senatorial elections held on Saturday. According to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, 89 seats were declared, with the APC winning 49, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP securing 28, and the Labour Party winning six seats. The New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, and Social Democratic Party, SDP, each secured two tails. At the same time, the Young Progressive Party, YPP, and All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, each won one senator.
Each state produced three senators, and the Federal Capital Territory made one, with Ireti Kingibe of APC defeating Phillip Aduda of PDP to be elected. The election result has been a topic of discussion amongst political analysts as the APC, with their majority seats, will have an edge in choosing the Senate President for the 10th National Assembly. The ruling party is expected to make a strategic decision in selecting a candidate that will support its agenda for the betterment of the country.
The 10th National Assembly is an opportunity for the APC to consolidate its power and ensure that its policies are implemented. The party’s majority in the Senate will be crucial in achieving this goal. It remains to be seen who the APC will choose as their candidate for the position of Senate President. Regardless, the result of the senatorial election has set the stage for an exciting political season in Nigeria.
