According to emergency news released by the World Health Organization (WHO) today, May 8, 2023, Equatorial Guinea and the United Republic of Tanzania have been responding to separate Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) outbreaks since early February and late March 2023, respectively.
Equatorial Guinea Cases
Equatorial Guinea reported 23 probable cases, while 17 have been confirmed in the laboratory from 13 February to 1 May 2023. 17 The latest of the reported cases was on April 20, 2023. Twelve (12) deaths – 75% of the Case Fatality Ratio (CFR). Four (4) out of the confirmed cases have recovered. All others, probable cases, are dead. Bata District is the most affected province (11 Laboratory-confirmed)
The Republic of Tanzania Cases
However, the Republic of Tanzania reported nine (9) cases, with eight (8) laboratory-confirmed and one (1) probable case. The latest confirmed case was on April 11, 2023. The total number of 6 reported dead – 66.7% are Case Fatality Ratio (CFR); One (1) probable case and five (5) laboratory-confirmed cases. A total number of 3 recovered. All reported cases are from Bukoba District in the Kagera region.

WHO also reported that both countries’ health authorities have shown strong political commitment. Recently, there has been a reinforcement of critical response functions, such as disease surveillance at entry points, laboratory activities, clinical case management, infection prevention and control, risk communication and community engagement, and operations support and logistics, with the assistance of WHO and its partners.
