President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Yusha’u Ahmed as the Director-General (DG) of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and will be assuming office Monday.
The NYSC Director, Press and Public Relations noted that the Brigadier-General would be taking over from Christy Uba, who has acted as the interim head of the corps since November 2022.
Mrs Uba is the NYSC Director of Information and Communications Technology and the first woman to lead the agency since its establishment in 1973, albeit on an interim basis.
Sack of former DG
The erstwhile DG of NYSC, Brigadier General Fadah, was removed following allegations of corruption, nepotism, and religious bias. The Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Sunday Dare, received a letter dated 2 September 2022 that detailed these allegations against the then DG.
Some petitions against Mr Fadah included concerns regarding his age and academic qualifications, which Mr Fadah failed to address satisfactorily. Following the complaints, Mr Fadah was removed as the DG with effect from 16 November 2022.
The NYSC scheme was created to reconstruct, reconcile and rebuild the country after the Nigerian Civil war. It is compulsory and has remained a significant milestone among young graduates of universities and polytechnics.
