Ubani’s Opinion on the President’s Broadcast Against the Pending Supreme Court Injunction.

During an interview session this morning on Channels TV, Monday Ubani, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association Section on Public Interest and Development Law (SPIDEL), said the President’s intervention overruled the Supreme court decision in his broadcast at 7 am this morning. However, he suggested that the President should have allowed the Supreme court to resolve the matter and not cut short the process.

President Muhammadu Buhari, during his broadcast this morning, directed the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to allow the new notes to be available to all Citizens, after which he apologised to Nigerians over the difficulty experienced in the implementation of the naira redesign policy.

The President also said old N 500 and N 1000 banknotes are no longer legal tender in Nigeria but extended the validity of the N 200 note for 6o days.

In his reaction during the special election programme on Channels TV, the human rights lawyer, Ubani, said the President should have waited and obeyed the Supreme court order, which shows the “President is not mindful of what is going on at the Supreme Court”.

The President has not set a good precedent because the international community is watching and will not have confidence in the country’s democracy and judicial process, says Ubani.
