Labour Leaders and FG Meeting Inconclusive

The Organized Labour Leaders and the Federal Government over the withdrawal of Petroleum subsidy payments ended in a deadlock. Both parties refused to shift ground. But the Federal Government hopes to continue negotiations and also to provide intervention to ease the sufferings of Nigerians.

Organized Labour insists that the Federal revert to status-quo and properly plan to stop petrol subsidy payment. Federal Government Representative Dele Alake briefly expressed that Mr. President called for a meeting of government and Labour. The federal government is optimistic that the issues will be resolved but did not halt the earlier decision to stop payment of petrol subsidy.

Dele acknowledges that ordinarily, the Labour would agitate whenever there is a slight change in the price of any commodity, including flour, garri or bread. But in terms of price, we can’t control the price when there is re-regulation. The price could go up and down. The federal government plan to provide intervention to ease the pressure on the poorest in society.

Joe Alaero, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), emphasized the to revert to the status quo, negotiate and think of alternatives of all the effects this action will have on the people. The subsidy provision has been made up to the end of June. So conscious people, Labour, management and the government should consider what will happen at the end of June.

According to President Tinubu’s speech at the inauguration, one of the hallmark of the new administration will be on dialogue and consultation, and not as a dictator. Contrary, the leader expressed his view that what has happened today differs from the speech.
