Breaking: NLC and TUC Suspend the Planned Strike

Breaking: NLC and TUC Supend the planned industrial action (strike) earlier scheduled to start on Wednesday, June 7, 2023. Hon Femi Gbajamiala, the honourable Speaker of the House of Representatives, provided an update on the NLC and TUC meeting with the Federal Government. During the speech, the Speaker of the House of Rep. highlighted the summary of the resolution below:

The Resolutions of the NLC and TUC Meeting with the Federal Government Representatives

Firstly, he appreciated the leaders of the NLC and TUC for their sense of duty and patriotism. The meetings lasted more than 5 hours. He thanked them on behalf of Mr President and the Federal government for taking and commitment to good government. Both parties have reached a tentative agreement on this issue as follows:

  1. The Federal Government, the TUC and NLC to establish a joint committee to review the proposal for a wage increase and establish a framework and timeline for implementation.
  2. Federal Government, TUC and NLC to review the World Bank Financial Transfer Scheme and propose the inclusion of low-income earners in the programme. (800 million dollar loan)
  3. The Federal Government, TUC and the NLC to revive the CNG conversion programme earlier agreed with Labour centres in 2021 and work out detailed implementation and timing.
  4. The Labour Centres and the Federal Government to review issues hindering effective delivery in the education sector and propose solutions for implementation.
  5. The Labour Centres and the Federal government to review and establish a framework for the completion of rehabilitation of the Nation’s refineries.
  6. The Federal Government is to provide a framework for the maintenance and expansion of rail networks across the country.
  7. All other demands submitted by TUC and NLC to the Federal Government will be assessed by the joint committee.

Consequently, the parties agreed as follows:

  1. The NLC is to suspend the notice of strike forthwith to enable further consultation.
  2. The TUC and NLC to continue the ongoing engagement with the Federal Government and secure closure on the resolutions above.
  3. And finally, the Labour Centres and the Federal Government to meet on June 19, 2023, to agree on the implementation framework.
